In 1950, Hazel Scott’s name was published alongside names of people with suspected communist ties in the book Red Channels: The Report of Communist Influence in Radio and Television. Her association with Café Society, a suspected communist hangout, and admitting she supported Harlem’s communist city council candidate Benjamin J. Davis made her a target. Scott voluntarily appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) to clear her name as she was not a member of the Communist Party. Despite providing solid evidence to the hearing, the committee gathered a list of nine organizations with communist ties that Scott performed at. She only recognized one. The suspicion surrounding Scott caused damage to her career. This was around the same time she was being celebrated for her achievement as the first African American to host her own national television show in the US. The Hazel Scott Show was cancelled weeks after the hearing.
